Podbara, a Neusatz neighborhood with a three-century history, has transformed from a humble village to a vibrant district, facing and overcoming myriad challenges while honoring its rich heritage and fostering a resilient, united community that navigatively weaves through past and present, always looking forward to a promising future.

Once upon a time, in the heart of Novi Sad, there existed a district called Podbara. This enchanting neighborhood stood as a testament to centuries of history, its roots stretching back nearly three centuries. Long ago, it was a humble village called Almasha, nestled on marshy land somewhere between present-day Temerin, Nadalj, Sirig, and Srbobran.

In search of a better life, the inhabitants of Almasha decided to leave their hearths behind and embark on a journey to nearby Petrovaradinski Šanac, now known as Novi Sad. Loading their possessions onto horse-drawn carts and oxen-driven sledges, they found refuge on the outskirts of Petrovaradinski Šanac, on a place known as Suva Greda, behind the grand houses near the vast lake.

In the year 1718, they formed their settlement, and it was named Podbara, after the marshy land that had surrounded them. The brave pioneers of Podbara settled in humble homes made of reeds, covered in mud, and topped with thatched roofs. Together, men and women toiled the land, cultivating it to sustain their livelihoods. Their hard work and unity helped Podbara thrive and grow.

As the years passed, Podbara embraced the spirit of the new era. In the 19th century, the whole city of Novi Sad experienced a unique progress in various aspects of life. In 1848/49, after revolutionary events, Podbara was renovated and expanded, reaching from Danube Street towards the Danube and further towards the current canal. New neighborhoods like Rotkvarija, Salajka, and Grbavica were born, adding to the vibrant urban landscape.

The district flourished, and the industrious people of Podbara were proud of their achievements. The women worked alongside the men, contributing to the family income through various trades and crafts. The land was cultivated with love and dedication, yielding bountiful crops and flourishing gardens.

Yet, the tumultuous events of history took their toll. In the early 20th century, little changed in Podbara, until the outbreak of World War II. In 1940, the dikes of the canal were breached, and the streets were submerged for weeks. During the war, part of Podbara, located near the industrial zone, suffered heavy damage due to bombings. The resilient people of Podbara, however, rose from the ashes and rebuilt their homes and lives.

After the war, during the 1960s, Podbara began its urban development according to a new plan. Modern residential buildings with multiple floors were constructed, and Podbara thrived with life and energy. The district's central location near the Danube River and its industrial potential attracted new residents and investors, further fueling its growth.

However, in the late 1970s, new construction sites opened in other areas, drawing away investors and resources from Podbara. The district's urban development came to a halt, and its once-bustling streets faced a decline. Despite these challenges, the spirit of Podbara endured. The residents of this historic neighborhood cherished their heritage and held tightly to their traditions. The echoes of their ancestors' courage and determination reverberated through the streets.

Today, Podbara stands as a captivating blend of history and modernity, where the past and present coexist harmoniously. Its streets, once traversed by pioneers and traders, now echo with the laughter of children and the chatter of neighbors.
